A house on the coast can look however you want it to, especially in your fictional writing, BUT it would only make sense that it’s built in some way to withstand weather conditions typical of the area.
In other words, if the place can’t withstand the might of a hurricane or crashing wave or heavy rain (basically all wind and water damage), it’s probably not going to be there long. Another thing that most writers don’t take into account is the fact that the land is subject to sink or erode. Keep those two things in mind, too.
Hope your stuff turns out good,

I am an aspiring author too. My vision of a house on a beach would be if you were standing underneath the balcony at a quarter degree angle, the sun is just about to fall, there is the reflection of the sun in the rippling waves of the water, you still see the edge of the house and the balcony (or deck which ever you want to call it)
There is a sand castle left over, a little bit of the castle’s edge falls over. I am sorry if I am rambling on, when I get an image, all the thoughts of what something would look like spill over like an overfilled glass of water, spilling on the floor making a big mess. Sorry again like I said, along with the simile. I hope my vision helped you a little bit. The furniture should be fancy too.
I always associate beach houses with white, blue, whicker and lots of windows if that helps at all. Also, pale wooden floors.
