I called an apartment once and they told me their limit was 20lb and I said “so because my dog is 22lb we can’t live their?” the woman on the phone herself said “no that’d be stupid- we just don’t want like 50lb+ dogs”
Most places you rent from will have a weight restriction. I live in Alabama and the weight restriction is usually 35-40 pounds. 25 pounds does seem a little harsh. You don’t need to break the rules though because they will make you either get rid of the dog or move out immediately- they take those things very seriously. They also charge high fees for having animals in a rental place so I bought a house as soon as I could to avoid those rules. I live in a 1700 square foot townhouse now (that I own) and have 2 dogs who are 45 pounds and I don’t think it’s too much to handle at all.
Probably isn’t the landlord complaining about the over crowded pounds.
Why does 5 lbs smaller make a difference to you? A small pup will love you just as much as a big one. I prefer big dogs myself, but small is better than none….
If you don’t like the terms of the lease, move somewhere else, or buy your own house and you can do whatever you want…
I think that a weight restriction is stupid. I have a 150 lb. Mastiff Lab mix in my 1000 sq. ft. home and she is fine. since we cannot change their restrictions though for a dog that small i would recommend a Pekingese or something like that. I also have a peak and chiuaua mix that I didn’t care for at first but has become my more favorite of the two.
good luck
I have three medium to large sized dogs in a condo about that size. Since I don’t clutter, there is plenty of room for them to play indoors and they get out to dog park like areas to romp and go for daily walks at least twice a day. They are happy and healthy. Those restrictions seem to be more based on complex or TH owner’s fears of liability.
If that is how their contract reads, then you would be bound to that. Sometimes places will waive a weight or size restriction. This has to be in writing for your own protection. You don’t want to get in a position of having a dog and then having some new manager suddenly notice how big your dog is or how big it is getting and tell you that you have to move or get rid of the dog.
I know 1100 sq. ft could contain a German Shepherd or a St. Bernard for that matter, as long as you were able to exercise your dog adequately.
When it comes down to it though, whatever is in your contract you have to abide by or face the possibility of losing an animal that doesn’t fall within weight limit rules.
I think that is pretty dumb! I don’t see why the weight of a dog matters. Its all about how they act!! My 15 lb Boston Terrier will tear up more crap than my 40 lb Basset Hound!
But anyway, find a dog you will love and get it! If its 30 or 35 lbs no one will know that! Also, you can search breeds by average weight online. Check it out. You may be surprised to find something you really like in that weight range!
absolutely not…..they just don’t want you getting a big dog like a pit bull.or the like, which are all muscle and can become out of control…there are lots of cute dogs out there that are under 25 pounds ….how about a cocker spaniel…they are cute active and loveable……
here is a list of dogs and their sizes by small, medium or large
Landlords are entitled to enforce any restrictions they see fit, providing they don’t discriminate against humans. My mom allows her tenants to have dogs and I grew up with dogs, but I always tell people to buy a house if they are grappling with what’s allowed in apartments.
find a 30lb one- no one is going to weigh it.

Get one around 35 pounds. Nobody is going to throw a fit over a few pounds if your dog is well behaved and doesn’t cause problems.

Labradors should fit into that category and are not that small .
