  1. Get samples of all the rocks and let them hold them. Then, tell the story of how this rock was formed. The aural/tactile approach may sink in when words like “sedimentary” and “igneous” are too challenging to read.

    Anything hands-on would be great. Janice VanCleave has great experiments. One mnemonic trick for memorizing the 3 types are:

    igneous = fire rock
    sedimentary= water rock
    metamorphic= changed rock

    Hope this helps!

    Get lots of rocks of each type.

    Briefly cover the three types, and give them a handout that explains how to tell each type.

    Set them at the task of categorizing the rocks as well as they can, in pairs or groups of three.

    Then have them see how other groups categoriezed their rocks, to see where there’s consensus, and where not.

    Then, each student writes a brief paper about how to tell the types of rock apart, or about trouble they had doing so, or something of that nature.
